Position:  Software Architect

Suitable for:  Senior Developer or Software Engineer or Software Architect with experience of designing solutions with Azure services

Location: Bristol / hybrid

Salary: to £65k

Our client is looking for a Software Architect with a broad technical focus across multiple areas.  You will guide teams and projects to delivering high quality end to end solutions based on your experience of commercial software applications.

The Software Architect will work hand in hand with System and Enterprise Architects to establish the technical vision for the product which will then be passed onto the Developers.  You will also take the lead on technical development initiatives that help to improve the software development cycle with particular emphasis on consistency, quality, reliability and efficiency of the product codebase


  • Min 5 years’ experience as Software Architect, Solutions Architect, Senior Developer, Software Engineer or similar
  • Significant development experience with excellent software engineering skills and specialist knowledge in several technical areas
  • High level of experience of formal software development and testing methodologies
  • Experience of assessing and prioritising technical debt
  • Experience of rearchitecting software to improve performance and scalability
  • Experience of designing software using Azure services
  • Experience of data modelling in relational and document databases
  • Domain or product expertise in multiple key areas associated with the role is strongly preferred.  As a minimum requirement, demonstrable ability to rapidly develop this level expertise from previous roles is a must


  • Health sector experience
  • Professional qualifications appropriate to software engineering roles

The Role:

The role of Software Architect will encompass different aspects of the following groupings:

  • Architecture – definition, system structure, logical view, physical view, architectural and security principles
  • Software Selection – application stack, databases, libraries, frameworks, technology standards
  • Infrastructure Selection – operating system, hardware, networks, disaster recovery plans
  • Non-functional requirements – performance, scalability, security
  • Leadership – technical leadership, responsibility and authority, steering the team
  • Tools and Trends – Agile, web, SOA, JQuery, J2E etc
  • Hands-on design, development and testing – UML diagrams, code, unit tests (TDD/BDD), manual testing
  • Development methodology – project structure and use of agile, Scrum, XP, RUP
  • Development processes – source code control, build processes, continuous integration, automated testing
  • Leadership, coaching and mentoring
